#3.  La La Land

This love letter to the musicals of the Hollywood Golden Age, is directed by Damien Chazelle and stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The film follows a down on his luck jazz artist, Gosling, and an up and coming actress, Stone, as they spend a year trying to gain prominence as artist while falling in love with each other. La La Land has been dominating the top prizes across the board during award season.

#2. Manchester by the Sea

Casey Affleck plays a downtrodden Boston handyman who when his brother dies, has to go to up to Manchester to take care of his family’s affairs and learning that is brother left him as the guardian of his 16-year-old son. He wants no part in taking care, and we watch as his past unravels as to why he does not want to be in his hometown. Directed by Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea is a family drama is an emotionally filled rollercoaster ride that is sure to send you into a whirlwind.

#1. Moonlight

The winner of the poll, as decided by you, is director Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight. Filmed in Miami and based on Miami playwright Tarell McCraney’s In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, Jenkin’s film is a coming of age tale that follows a boy named Chiron across three significant moments in his life. Played by three different actors, Chiron must deal with the torment brought upon by school bullies and mother for being gay, and whose only refuge is a drug dealer who decides to teach Chiron important life lessons. Chiron’s struggle with his identity manages to resonate widely amongst audiences. It is a story that deserves to be heard.
