Miami Jewish Film Festival Focus: Special Screening with Kubrick’s Right-Hand Man

The Twenty-First Annual Miami Jewish Film Festival, among South Florida’s premier cultural events, will run from January 11 through 25. Screening over 60 films from 20 countries in venues throughout Miami, the festival will also host numerous filmmakers and special guests, and including one event sure to interest many FIU students.

As part of the festival, Filmworker, the story of Stanley Kubrick’s right-hand man Leon Vitali, will show at the Miami Beach Cinematheque in Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 PM, with Leon Vitali himself attending for a special discussion. Festival Director Igor Shteyrenberg has worked with the MBC to make specially discounted tickets available to FIU students. Just purchase your ticket online and use the discount code: fiufilm.

The full program includes a wide range of films from around the world that will appeal to a variety of tastes, as well as many U.S. and even world premiers, reflecting the growth of the festival under the directorship of Igor Shteyrenberg into a truly world-class event. While retaining its core identity as a Jewish film festival, MJFF has expanded to embrace the diversity and the youthful energy of the city it both represents and supports. Check out FIU alumnus and Florida Film critic Juan Barquin’s review of the festival lineup from the Miami New Times.

And in case you had forgotten, Mr. Shteyrenberg, a graduate of the USC film school, will be teaching a course in the art of cinematography (no previous knowledge or experience required) at the BBC this spring. Just look for ENG 4132, section B51-C. (Don’t worry if Dr. Strycharski is listed as the instructor when you check. Mr. Shteyrenberg will be teaching the course.)
