It’s practically impossible to not have at least heard about “Moonlight” by now, especially in Miami. So we’ve teamed up with a few organizations to bring FIU a free screening and discussion of our native gem! It doesn’t matter if you haven’t gotten around to watching it or seen it more than five times, be a little extra for Miami on April 4th and join us in GC 140.
Set and filmed in our very own Liberty City, Barry Jenkins stole everyone’s hearts through the life of Chiron and his captivating story told in three different eras of his life. Sweeping awards left and right, including the earned title of “First Black & LGBT Film to Win an Academy Award for Best Movie”, “Moonlight” has been a hot topic for the last few months. It’s known to be a socially conscious work of art with its genuine ability to touch upon identity, sexuality, race, and drug abuse while breaking away from stigmas that come along with it.
Immediately after the screening, a discussion panel will be held. Including diverse and inspiring intersectional voices, they will share resources, opportunities, and experiences with the audience. Feel free to join in on the riveting conversation that this film has ignited in communities everywhere. Panelists include Marshall Davis, Director of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Jonathan Spikes, the President and Founder of the Jonathan Spikes Foundation, Lutze Segu, Gender Justice Organizer for Miami Workers Center/New Florida Majority, and FIU’s Kemar McIntosh, MA/PhD student for African and African Diaspora Studies and in Global and Global & Sociocultural Studies. The panel will be moderated by FIU English Department Chairperson Dr. Heather Russell.
