I Feel Pretty is Hideously Self-Absorbed

The idea that a woman in modern society can feel confident about her appearance and capable of success is apparently a foreign concept to the creators of Amy Schumer’s latest comedy film, I Feel Pretty. The film has faced some pretty harsh backlash from the release of its first trailer and I have to say, after watching the film, that it is absolutely deserved. This is a film which attempts to convince women to feel better about themselves and what they look like, but it doesn’t even believe in its own message.

A Quiet Place Will Leave You Speechless

A Quiet Place is the type of movie you see in silence through the silhouette of your fingers as you cower in your seat. From the very first emotionally charged opening scene of director John Krasinski’s first foray into the horror genre, audiences will feel invested in the story of the Abbott family. In this post-apocalyptic world, Lee Abbott – played by Krasinksi – his wife, Evelyn Abbott – played by Emily Blunt – and their three children attempt to survive by living as quietly and unobtrusively as they can. Unnamed and deathly monsters lie in wait for the next loud sound to draw them out of hiding.

More Action, Less Skill in Pacific Rim: Uprising

Bring on more of the gigantic monster-fighting robots! Pacific Rim: Uprising is the anticipated sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 Pacific Rim. Part of the reason the first film gained popularity when it was released was the vibrant inventiveness with which it hit audiences. Del Toro directed the first film and created with it a journey into the conflicted world which pits humanity against the monstrous Kaiju using the giant robots called Jaegers. It was a fun and action-packed adventure film which broke up the continuous flow of overdone narratives in action films at the time. Pacific Rim: Uprising unfortunately falls into the category of movie sequels which destroy the possibilities for a great franchise.

Road to the Oscars: The Shorts

From now until March 4th, the Oscars hype will follow some of the most popular names in filmmaking. The nominees for Documentary, Live Action, and Animated shorts, however, are rarely as eminent in theaters or for audiences. Short films are neither as accessible or as sought after as films with longer running times. Luckily, now’s the perfect time for you to change that before the Oscars air in March. Theaters like O Cinema and The Bill Cosford Cinema will be playing all of the nominees for the short film categories starting this weekend!

Paul Thomas Anderson Weaves a Tale of Obsession and Unconventional Love in Phantom Thread

The opening titles of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, Phantom Thread, enthrall the viewer into a tale of twisted love and obsessive passions through the delicacy and precision of the musical score – written by former guitarist of the band Radiohead, Johnny Greenwood. In Daniel Day Lewis’ final performance before retirement, he plays Reynolds Woodcook, a fashion designer consumed by his work. He dresses heiresses and princesses in his elegant and impressive London townhouse alongside his loyal sister Cyril, played by Leslie Manville, and together they preside over their team with fanatical efficiency. He is a man too preoccupied with his own work to worry about the trivial feelings of others, like the women he sees before meeting Alma.
