Where to Catch Oscar Nominees

Film’s are released every day and it’s likely you didn’t get to see some of the ones up for awards at the Oscars this year. If you thought you missed out on seeing these films on the big screen, fret not! Here is where you can get your cinema fix before awards season ends.

Yeah, you could watch Roma on Netflix, but Coral Gables Art Cinema will be showing it on the big screen in gorgeous 70mm. Even if you’ve already seen Alfonso Cuarón’s personal story about a middle class family seen from the vantage of their housekeeper Cleo (Best Actress Nominee Yalitza Aparicio), this is the way to watch Cuaron’s Best Picture-nominated film, especially considering it’s also up for the Cinematography award.

Local theaters are also showing many of the Best Foreign Language nominees. There’s still time to catch Cold War (Foreign Language Film, Cinematography, Director) at the Coral Gables Art Cinema, with regular evening screenings through the end of January and two encore matinees on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2 &3). And another Best Foreign Language nominee, Capernaum (Jury Prize winner at Cannes), opens at Coral Gables this Saturday, and at the historical Tower Theater starting this Friday (Feb. 1). Shoplifters (Best Foreign Language), a heartbreaking drama about a Japanese family forced to shoplift in order to survive, opens at O Cinema on Feb. 1.

If you usually have no clue about the films in the shorts category, the Miami Beach Cinematheque is hosting Oscar Showcases for both animated and live-action shorts. The showcases open February 8 and run through the Oscars to the end of the month.

Local megaplexes continue to screen nominated films such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Animated Feature), Mary Poppins Returns (Production Design, Original Score, Original Song, Costume Design), Vice (Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay, and more), and Green Book (Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay).

As awards season approaches Regal and AMC also do Best Picture Showcases, where you can sit down for a marathon of all the films up for the award. So, be on the lookout for that.
